Holdings and Snapshots

A Holding is one thing a Member owns or owes, with a current value and the date of that value. Examples: a mutual fund folio, PPF, NPS, a ULIP, an insurance policy, a loan, savings.

What a Holding holds

  • A type: mutual fund folio, PPF, NPS, ULIP, insurance policy, loan, savings, or other.
  • The fund house.
  • A fund category: equity, debt, hybrid, or liquid.
  • An option: Growth or IDCW.
  • A protected flag and a liquid flag.
  • An optional return rate in percent for each year.

Snapshots

A Snapshot is the value of a Holding on one date. Each change in value is a new Snapshot. Kosh keeps the earlier Snapshots. A Holding has one Snapshot for each date. A second value for the same date replaces the first.

Snapshots over time give the net-worth history.

Family view

The Family view adds up all Members. It shows:

  • the total for each Member and the total for the Household,
  • net worth: Holdings minus loans,
  • the date of the latest Snapshot for each Holding,
  • the concentration in percent for each fund and for each fund house. Loans do not count in the total.

Cover and Protection gap

A Cover is the sum that an insurance policy pays on the insured event. Kosh stores each policy with its type (life or health), the sum, the start date, the end date, and the insured Member.

The Protection gap is the Cover the Household needs minus the Cover it has, for a given year. The gap is never below zero.

Kosh finds the needed Cover for a year in this order:

  1. A needed Cover that a Member typed for that year.
  2. For life Cover, a fixed formula: the loan outstanding at the start of the year, plus the sum of the yearly outflows of all Plan Items for that year, multiplied by N. N is a Household setting in years. The default is 10.
  3. For health Cover there is no formula. If no Member typed a value, Kosh shows "not set" and shows no gap.

The screen shows the source of each value: "typed" or "formula".

Kosh is a tracker, not an adviser. It gives no investment advice.
